A client emailed me this late last week with a lot of exclamation points in the message – the good kind!  It’s nice to win, and fun to share when things work out in a client’s favor.

Perhaps the most common frustration I hear from prospects and clients is how often their former employees are awarded unemployment benefits.  Most employers feel that terminations for cause should not result in payment of benefits.  I’ve written about this previously so I won’t go into the mechanics of the process again here, but small employers often feel a big impact when “for cause” claims result in payment to the terminated employee.

In this case, my client had two recent terminations for very different circumstances and neither was simple & straightforward.  I had helped with documentation as each situation developed and with the termination documentation when that time came.  Of course both applied for unemployment.  I prepared responses on the client’s behalf and we attached the relevant documentation from each file.  Last week the notice of determination arrived for both – and neither of the terminated employees was awarded benefits!

If you aren’t contesting claims or don’t have confidence in your documentation or record-keeping, call or email to discuss how we can put some wins on the board for your company too!
